My laptop was overheating last week and I did what I always had done first: brought it to Best Buy and the Geek Squad. The guy behind the desk told me that the fan was running slowly and that they would need to send it off to be diagnosed and repaired (4 weeks turnaround). They also quoted me several hundred dollars–more if they needed to replace the fan–PLUS SHIPPING. I work using my laptop and cannot afford to send it away for a month–especially when the official diagnosis hasn’t even been given as to what the problem even is. So I searched elsewhere.
After looking at a few other pc repair shops in Manhattan I ended up at New York Computer Help, initially wary of the somewhat obvious title. Within five minutes they had diagnosed the problem (it just needed a cleaning) and quoted me less than half of what any of the other shops had quoted me, telling me it would be ready for pickup the next day. One day.
Lo and behold I wasn’t out the door 2 hours when they phoned me and told me it was ready for pickup. By the time I was done running errands I had my laptop back in hand and was back to work the moment I got home. I’ve never had such a positive experience with tech repair. Next time I’ll save myself the time and struggle and go to them first.
